Oaklands Testimonial

At the Chamber of Commerce Stevenage Bioscience Catalyst, I had the honour in meeting Rebecca Slough, CEO and MD of D5 Design. When discussing work experience, D5 Design showed great interest and enthusiasm of investing in our new generation of students and teaching them about science and technical communication. Using the communal spaces of the college, D5 Design were able to provide work experience to a much larger group than companies are normally able to offer at their own premises.

Through close collaboration, the D5 team provided work experience to around 100 students this academic year alone. Together we found ways to get Applied Science, Engineering and ICT students to work collaboratively to complete projects successfully through effective communication.

Each project cohort was delivered with an initial full day workshop, demonstrating the importance of science and technical communication, through presentations and activities. Students learned about the importance of effective communication for successful progression in the world of science and engineering and technology, and opened their minds to creative careers options.

Students connected and networked with the D5 Design creative team, experienced first-hand and learnt all about the creative content they make using 3D, graphic design, and platforms such as Virtual Reality to enhance communication of science through technology.

To conclude, the cross-curriculum experiences aimed to develop our students’ technical and soft skills, enhancing students’ employability and help shape their future careers paths. These experiences helped students advanced their research skills, innovation and creativity in problem solving, connections and networking, collaboration and communications, independence and time-management, and presentation skills.

“Many thanks to the great team of D5 design, I look forward to more great work and collaborations in the next academic year.” Amira Abu Laban Zarour, IP and WEX Advisor, Oaklands College
